Nicholson Baker writes fiction rooted in everyday observation and nonfiction based on documentary research. After studying music, he earned a degree in English at Haverford College. The Mezzanine expanded a brief escalator ride into an intricate investigation of objects, habits and thought. Double Fold examined libraries' replacement of original newspapers and books with microfilm, questioning the loss of information contained in paper artifacts; it won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Finding a Likeness recorded his attempt to learn drawing and painting through words and images. It followed tools, portraits, landscapes, mistakes and practice, turning from his investigations of war and official secrecy toward the experience of making art.
