Nicholas Boggs (born 1973) is an American biographer and independent literary scholar whose work explores James Baldwin’s life and writing, particularly the relationship between intimacy and artistic creation. Raised in Washington, D.C., he earned a BA in English from Yale University, an MFA in creative writing from American University, and a Ph.D. in English from Columbia University. As an undergraduate, he discovered Baldwin’s out-of-print children’s book and subsequently sought out its illustrator, the French artist Yoran Cazac. This research led him to coedit the book’s new edition in 2018. His account of how friendship, love, and artistic collaboration shaped Baldwin’s writing and political commitments, “Baldwin: A Love Story,” was published in 2025. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material and interviews, the biography centers on Baldwin’s relationships with his mentor, painter Beauford Delaney; his lover, Lucien Happersberger; actor Engin Cezzar; and Cazac. It follows Baldwin across Harlem, Paris, Istanbul, and southern France, connecting his private relationships with his novels, essays, plays, and public activism. The book won the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize for the 2025 publishing year and the 2026 PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography, and was shortlisted for the 2026 Baillie Gifford Prize. Boggs brings Baldwin’s public role as a civil rights advocate into conversation with his personal search for love, belonging, and creative partnership.
