Nicci French is the shared pen name of British journalists Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, who write psychological suspense together. Gerrard taught English literature and helped launch a magazine about women, literature, and the arts before working in literary editing and feature journalism at the New Statesman and the Observer. French worked as a theatre, film, and television critic. They met through the New Statesman and married in 1990. Their collaboration brings together planning, research, and visits to the locations of their fiction, while the prose is written separately. They pass the manuscript between them, each free to revise the other’s writing. Their debut, “The Memory Game” (1997), published in Japanese as “Memori Gemu,” grew out of debates about recovered memories in psychotherapy. It connected the uncertain reconstruction of personal experience with the investigation of an earlier crime. In “Blue Monday” (2011), which began the eight-book Frieda Klein series, a London psychotherapist is troubled by similarities between a patient’s dreams and the abduction of a young boy. The series brought psychological interpretation into contact with police investigation. Detective Maud O’Connor appeared in “Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter?,” published in English in 2024. A woman’s disappearance and the discovery of a man’s body leave two families with an unresolved history. Almost thirty years later, a podcast revisits those events, reopening suspicions and exposing the lasting effects of the original investigation. The novel explored the relationship between public accounts of a crime and the private damage sustained by those left behind.
