Kanae Nishio is a Japanese translator specializing in biology and natural history. Nishio graduated from Kyoto University’s Faculty of Science, completed a master’s course in its Graduate School of Science, and subsequently left the doctoral program. Nishio has also taught biology to students preparing for medical-school entrance examinations. In Richard C. Francis’s “Domesticated,” Nishio translated an examination of how animals living alongside humans have changed in form and behavior, drawing on research into evolution and development. Nishio also translated “Spiders of the World,” edited by Norman I. Platnick, an illustrated account of spider diversity, classification, and natural history. As a co-translator of the Smithsonian-supervised “The Natural History Book,” Nishio worked on a reference covering minerals, rocks, fossils, microorganisms, plants, and animals. Its visual presentation connects classification with the history of life. Nishio also contributed to the revised Japanese edition published in 2024.
