Toru Nishigaki (born 1948) is a Japanese scholar of information studies and media theory. After graduating from the University of Tokyo with a degree in mathematical engineering, he worked on computer systems research and development at Hitachi and later served as a visiting researcher at Stanford University. He subsequently held professorships at Meiji University, the University of Tokyo, and Tokyo Keizai University, and is Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. Nishigaki is best known for developing "Fundamental Informatics," an interdisciplinary framework that examines information across biological, human, social, and technological systems. In "Kiso Johogaku: Seimei kara Shakai e" ("Fundamental Informatics: From Life to Society"), he challenges the idea of information as merely data or symbols and develops a theory of information grounded in living systems, extending it to human communication, society, and machines.
