Masashi Niwano is a glaciologist, meteorologist, and climate scientist specialising in interactions between the atmosphere and snow and ice. He graduated from the Meteorological College in 2004, worked at the Toyama Local Meteorological Office and Tokyo Regional Headquarters, and joined the Meteorological Research Institute in 2008. He earned a doctorate in science from Nagoya University’s Graduate School of Environmental Studies in 2016. His research combines field observations and numerical modelling to study seasonal snow in Japan and the Greenland Ice Sheet, including melting, surface energy balance, and changes in ice-sheet mass. With colleagues, he developed the Snow Metamorphism and Albedo Process model, SMAP, which represents snowpack processes and changes in reflectivity. In 2018 he coupled it with the Japan Meteorological Agency’s non-hydrostatic atmospheric model to construct the regional climate model NHM-SMAP. Since 2012 he has spent more than one hundred days on the Greenland Ice Sheet measuring atmospheric, snow, and ice conditions. He received the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice’s Hirata Award in 2017 and the Meteorological Society of Japan’s Horiuchi Award in 2025. In his Japanese-language book “Kori no Shima Greenland de Nani ga Okiteiru no ka,” he explained ice-sheet mass balance, mechanisms driving melting, and episodes of exceptional melt, introducing the field observations and climate models used to investigate these changes.
