Dai Natsume (born 1966) is a Japanese translator specializing in nonfiction on science, psychology, information technology, and social issues. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he graduated from Doshisha University’s Faculty of Letters and worked as a systems engineer at a major manufacturer before turning to translation. He began working freelance in 1996 and has also taught publishing translation at Fellow Academy. In Peter Godfrey-Smith’s Other Minds, published in Japanese as タコの心身問題――頭足類から考える意識の起源, he translated an inquiry into the relationship between mind and body through the nervous systems and behavior of cephalopods, whose evolutionary history differs from our own. His Japanese translation of Siddharth Kara’s Cobalt Red, titled ブラッド・コバルト――コンゴ人の血がスマートフォンに変わるまで, followed reporting on cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its global supply chains, including the labor and environmental conditions behind rechargeable batteries. In Paul Bloom’s The Sweet Spot, translated as 苦痛の心理学――なぜ人は自ら苦しみを求めるのか, he worked on an exploration of voluntarily chosen suffering, from spicy food and horror films to demanding challenges, and its relationship to pleasure and meaning in life, drawing on psychology and neuroscience.
