Kyoko Nakajima (born 1964) is a Japanese novelist. After graduating from the Department of History at Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, she worked for a publishing company and later as a freelance writer before making her fiction debut with "FUTON" in 2003. Drawing on subjects such as family, aging, migration, and memories of war, her novels move between past and present to recover personal experiences that are often absent from official histories. Her best-known work, "Chiisai Ouchi," received the Naoki Prize in 2010. It is narrated through the recollections of Taki, an elderly woman who once worked as a maid in a red-roofed house in suburban Tokyo during the early Showa period. Against the background of Japan’s drift toward war, the novel connects her memories of the young mistress and a relationship within the household with facts left unwritten and discovered only after Taki’s death, revealing the desire and regret concealed beneath nostalgic accounts of prewar life.
