Umihiko Namekawa is a Japanese translator and writer on information technology, the internet, and entrepreneurship. Born in Chiba Prefecture, he graduated in law from the University of Tokyo and worked for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government before entering writing and translation. He began translating TechCrunch Japan articles in 2006 and worked on books about Silicon Valley companies and technologies. With Nobuo Takahashi, he co-translated Ben Horowitz’s “The Hard Thing About Hard Things,” which draws on an entrepreneur’s experience to discuss decisions during business crises, layoffs, and organizational development. They also co-translated Reid Hoffman and Chris Yeh’s “Blitzscaling,” an examination of rapid expansion that prioritizes speed over efficiency under uncertainty. Namekawa’s own Japanese-language book “AI Katsuyo Honyaku Nyumon: Eigo wa Tanoshii” addressed approaches to reading and translating English with the assistance of AI.
