Tamio Nawa (born 1967) is a Japanese bat craftsman who has made wooden bats for professional baseball players. Originally from Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture, he graduated from Ogaki Technical High School and joined Mizuno Technics in 1985. After working in golf club manufacturing and logistics, he moved to the bat manufacturing section in 1993 and trained under master craftsman Isokazu Kubota. In 2008, he took over responsibility for making bats for Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui. His work has involved assessing the properties of the wood and translating players’ requests for shape, weight, and feel into a finished bat. He has also made bats for players including Kenjiro Nomura, Takuro Ishii, and Shinya Miyamoto, adjusting his work to their individual specifications. Nawa played rubber-ball baseball in junior high school and hardball baseball as an outfielder in high school. His Japanese-language book “Batto Shokunin: Meiko ga Takumi no Waza de Egaku Hakkyu no Kiseki” followed the process from selecting raw wood to completing a bat. Drawing on his workshop experience, it examined daily craftsmanship and collaboration with elite hitters, compared wooden, metal, and composite materials, and considered the future of bat making.
