Takashi Nagaoka (born 1981) is a scholar of religion specializing in Japanese religious history and Japanese studies. Born in Nara Prefecture, he graduated from Osaka University’s Faculty of Letters in 2004 and continued his postgraduate studies there, receiving a doctorate in literature in 2012. He held research fellowships with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and at Bukkyo University before teaching and conducting research at Komazawa University. His work examines modern popular religious movements through state repression, participation in war, interpretations of faith and the formation of postwar memories. In Shinshukyo to Soryokusen: Kyoso Igo o Ikiru, he studied Tenrikyo after the death of its founder, tracing how leaders and followers reinterpreted inherited teachings and participated in wartime mobilization. The book received the Japanese Association for Religious Studies’ 2016 award and the eleventh encouragement award of the Association of Japanese Intellectual History. In Shukyo Bunka wa Dare no Mono ka: Omoto Dan’atsu Jiken to Sengo Nihon, he explored how memories of the suppression of Omoto were reworked through peace activism, the writing of institutional history, scholarship and literature, treating religious culture as a field of encounters among believers and other participants. Minshu Shukyo: Teikoku Nihon no Shinko to Nationalism extended his account across roughly 150 years, from the early nineteenth century to the aftermath of Japan’s defeat. It traced beliefs, ideas, overseas missions, repression and wartime cooperation to examine the complex relations between popular religious movements and imperial Japan.
