Nathaniel Philbrick (1956–) is an American historian and nonfiction author. Specializing in early American history, maritime history, and exploration, he is widely admired for combining meticulous historical research with compelling narrative storytelling. His books have explored subjects ranging from the tragedy of the whaleship Essex to the American Revolution and the Civil War. His best-known book, "In the Heart of the Sea", recounts the 1820 sinking of the whaleship Essex after it was attacked by a sperm whale. The book won the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
