Naofumi Nakamura (born 1966) is an economic historian specializing in the economic and business history of Japan. Born in Kumamoto Prefecture, he graduated from Kumamoto University in 1989 and pursued graduate study at Kyushu University, receiving his doctorate in literature there in 1997. After teaching at Saitama University, he returned to the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Social Science and became a professor in 2010. His work examines railway enterprises, technological development, and local entrepreneurship during Japan’s industrialization. He has also used regional fieldwork in Kamaishi and oral histories of managers and workers to investigate relationships between industrial change and local communities. His Japanese-language “Chiho kara no Sangyo Kakumei” (2010) examined industrialization through provincial entrepreneurs, their financing, and their personal networks, extending analysis beyond major cities and central business groups. In “Umi wo Wataru Kikansha” (2016), he connected the development of Japanese railways to international commerce by tracing relationships among locomotive manufacturers, trading companies, and railway operators. The book received the Shima Hideo Memorial Award for Outstanding Railway Books in 2017 and book awards from the Forum for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Railway History Society of Japan in 2018. Drawing on the Japanese monograph’s source material with extensive revisions and additions, his English-language “Trading Locomotives” (2025) followed locomotive trade and the emergence of domestic production between 1869 and 1914, analyzing technology transfer and trading companies in relation to Japanese industrialization and imperial expansion. It received the Special Award of the 42nd Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize in 2026.
