Makiko Nakano is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on contemporary politics, journalism, and the Middle East. As a representative of Democracy Now! Japan, she has worked on making the American independent news program available in Japanese. Her translation of “The Pen and the Sword,” conversations between Edward W. Said and David Barsamian, addresses Palestine, American politics, and the relationship between intellectuals and power. She also translated “Parallels and Paradoxes,” Daniel Barenboim and Said’s conversations edited by Ara Guzelimian. Their discussion connects performance and literature with identity and the political conflicts surrounding their musical collaboration. In “Don’t Look Left: A Diary of Genocide,” Nakano translated Atef Abu Saif’s record of the war that began in Gaza in 2023. Written amid displacement and bombardment, the diary documented concern for relatives and the daily search for food, water, and safety.
