Akio Nakamori (born 1960) is a Japanese writer and idol critic from Mie Prefecture. Active across magazines, television, and other media since the 1980s, he is also known for introducing the term “otaku” into commentary on youth culture. His criticism and fiction approach music and idols as expressions of changing sensibilities and social life. In “Tokyo Tongari Kids,” serialized in the magazine Takarajima, he specified background music for each installment, inviting readers to experience stories in the spirit of listening to rock, punk, and pop. Drawing on decades of reporting and personal experience, “Osu Chikara: Jinsei o Kaketa Aidoru Ron” traces Japanese idols from the 1970s onward within the wider history of postwar popular culture, asking what supporting a favorite performer can mean in a person’s life. His 2026 novel “Ano Subarashii Toki o Mo Ichido” takes musician Kazuhiko Kato as its model and journeys through an era shaped by his music. In his account of the book’s creation, Nakamori connects memories of music he heard when young with a request from a friend of Kato to turn the musician’s life into a story. The novel brings together his work interpreting the cultural icons of an era and his effort to convey the sensations of music and youth through fiction.
