Yuka Nakajima is a Japanese translator of English-language nonfiction encompassing social and economic history, reported accounts of contemporary society, and music culture. She studied English literature at Waseda University. Her translations have ranged from books on states and economic institutions to accounts of technology and inequality and histories of musicians and magazines. In Michael Keen and Joel Slemrod’s “Rebellion, Rascals, and Revenue,” published in Japanese as “Kazei to Datsuzei no Keizaishi,” she translated an account that uses episodes from ancient taxation to modern tax avoidance to examine fairness, tax incidence, and efficiency. Following this work connecting institutional history with economic theory, she translated Dominic Frisby’s “The Secret History of Gold” as “Gold: Kin no Sekaishi.” The book traces gold’s involvement in politics, economics, and human desire, from its use in the ornament and authority of ancient civilizations to the gold standard, central banking, and modern monetary systems. Her work in music publishing also includes the Japanese translation of “Iron Maiden: Infinite Dreams,” an official visual history marking the band’s fiftieth anniversary. Combining testimony from band members with previously unpublished photographs and album artwork, it followed the development of the band’s career and creative work.
