Izumi Nakagawa is a Japanese translator working on music, science, medicine, and design. She graduated in English from Osaka University of Foreign Studies. Her work includes musicians’ memoirs and interviews, illustrated scientific reference books, and investigations of contemporary medical practice. She translated Susan Rogers and Ogi Ogas’s “This Is What It Sounds Like,” which examines musical preferences through features of sound and differences in listeners’ cognition and emotional responses. Her translation of Blair Bigham’s “Death Interrupted” drew on emergency and intensive-care medicine to consider how life-prolonging technologies complicate decisions for patients, families, and physicians. These translations addressed personal experiences through both first-hand accounts and scientific research.
