Kenro Nagoshi (born 1953) is a Japanese journalist and specialist in Russia and the former Soviet Union from Okayama Prefecture. He is a visiting professor at the Institute of World Studies, Takushoku University. After graduating from the Russian-language program at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, he joined Jiji Press and served in positions including Bangkok correspondent and bureau chief in Moscow and Washington. He holds a doctorate in security studies. His work examines the collapse of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Putin’s rule, the Northern Territories dispute, and Russian foreign policy through both frontline reporting and security research. In his representative book, “Joku de Yomitoku ‘Roshia Kindai-shi’,” Nagoshi uses Russian political jokes known as anekdoty to trace the period from the Russian Revolution and Stalinism to the Soviet collapse, the Putin era, and the war in Ukraine, revealing how ordinary people expressed frustration, resignation, and criticism under authoritarian rule.
