Yoshiro Nagayo (1888–1961) was a Japanese novelist, playwright and critic. Born in Tokyo, he was the fifth son of the physician Sensai Nagayo. He left the English literature program at Tokyo Imperial University without graduating and joined the Shirakaba literary circle in 1911. Associated with writers including Saneatsu Mushanokoji, he explored individuality, spiritual freedom and humanistic ideals through fiction, drama and criticism. Depicting a young metalworker’s predicament under Japan’s prohibition of Christianity, his 1923 story “The Bronze Christ” examines the conflict between artistic conviction and religious persecution. The protagonist’s achievement in creating an image of Christ brings him into confrontation with the authorities, raising questions about the values a person may defend at the risk of death. Reconstructing his own intellectual and emotional development through relationships with family and friends, “Waga Kokoro no Henreki,” an autobiographical account of his spiritual journey, received the 11th Yomiuri Prize for Literature in the criticism and biography category. Nagayo drew on historical subjects, religious conflicts and personal experience to examine how individuals with strongly held ideals confront society and other people. His work places those convictions under pressure, exploring the tensions between inner freedom, human relationships and external authority.
