Risa Nagao is a Japanese translator of English-language books on politics, society, science, and the arts. She graduated from the Department of Economics in Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics. Her translations span memoirs by political figures and actors, investigative reporting, books on film and music, biographies for younger readers, and introductions to art. With Satomi Shibata, she co-translated Michelle Obama’s “Becoming,” published in Japanese as “My Story” in 2019. The memoir traced Obama’s upbringing and education in Chicago, her work as a lawyer, marriage to Barack Obama, parenthood, and life as First Lady. In 2025 Nagao translated Elliot Page’s “Pageboy.” Moving back and forth through time, it recounted an acting career and harassment in Hollywood alongside relationships with family and friends and experiences of gender identity and sexuality. In 2026 she translated Alice Harman’s “Mona Lisa and the Others,” an official Louvre book illustrated by Quentin Blake, published in Japanese as “Mona Lisa to Louvre no Meisakutachi.” Works including the Venus de Milo and the Seated Scribe become narrators, describing their histories and offering points to consider when looking at them. Through this approach, the book introduced the historical contexts and expressive characteristics of paintings and sculptures in the museum’s collection.
