Mamoru Mohri (born 1948) is a Japanese astronaut and scientist from Yoichi, Hokkaido. After conducting materials science research at Hokkaido University, he was selected as an astronaut in 1985. In 1992, he became the first Japanese person to fly aboard the Space Shuttle, conducting materials and life science experiments. His second flight, in 2000, involved mapping the Earth’s terrain. He also served as the founding director of Miraikan, Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, promoting public engagement with science. “Uchu kara no Okurimono” recounts astronaut training, life in weightlessness, scientific experiments, and views of Earth from space. In “Uchu kara Manabu: Universology no Susume,” he develops an outlook that understands life, nature, and human society through their interconnectedness. His writing connects the experience of seeing Earth from orbit with questions about humanity’s shared survival.
