Akio Morita (1921–1999) was a Japanese business executive and co-founder of Sony. After studying physics at Osaka Imperial University, he established Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, the company that became Sony, with Masaru Ibuka in 1946. While Ibuka concentrated largely on technological development, Morita led product planning, sales, branding, and international expansion. He helped create the globally recognizable Sony name and brought products including transistor radios and the Walkman to overseas consumers, contributing to a change in international perceptions of Japanese electronics. In “Made in Japan: Akio Morita and Sony,” Morita recounts the company’s founding and expansion while explaining his belief that businesses should not merely identify existing demand but create new markets through products consumers have not yet imagined.
