Takehito Moriizumi (born 1975) is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator from Tokyo. He made his commercial manga debut in 2010 when “Mary in the Forest” appeared in “Monthly Comic Beam.” His distinctive technique involves drawing lines with water, dropping calligraphy ink onto them, and adding details with toothpicks and chopsticks, producing images in which light, shadow, memory, and dreams seem to flow into one another. His representative work, “Solaris,” is a manga adaptation of Stanisław Lem’s science-fiction novel and was selected as a finalist for the Manga Grand Prize at the 30th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Through the story of psychologist Kris Kelvin, who arrives at a research station above the planet Solaris and encounters his long-dead lover, the work explores contact with an intelligence beyond human comprehension and a mind unable to escape memory and guilt.
