Mikiya Mochizuki (1938–2016) was a Japanese manga artist. Born in Yokohama, he made his debut in 1960 with “Tokudane o oe,” a story about pursuing a news scoop. His best-known series, “Wild 7,” follows Hiba and six fellow members of an unconventional police unit as they confront violent criminals beyond the reach of ordinary law enforcement. Serialized for roughly a decade from 1969, it combines motorcycle chases and gun battles with the troubling implications of administering justice outside normal legal constraints. “Himitsu tantei JA,” a spy-action series about a secret investigator, features international intrigue and inventive gadgets. In 2016, Mochizuki received the Special Award of the Japan Cartoonists Association for “Wild 7R” and his other works. His action manga combines detailed depictions of firearms and vehicles with bold compositions that emphasize movement.
