Molly Crabapple is an American artist, illustrator, and journalist. After documenting Occupy Wall Street from the ground, she developed a form of visual reportage that combines writing and drawing, reporting from Syria, Ukraine, Gaza, Greek refugee camps, the U.S.–Mexico border, and Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and her film projects have received two Emmy Awards. In "Brothers of the Gun: A Memoir of the Syrian War," co-written with Syrian journalist Marwan Hisham, Crabapple created dozens of ink drawings from photographs and testimony secretly sent from Islamic State–controlled Raqqa. The book uses words and images to document the friendship and dispersal of young participants in the Syrian uprising, government bombardment, and everyday life under Islamic State rule. It was longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
