Guy de Maupassant (1850–1893) was a French novelist and short-story writer. Born in Normandy, he developed his craft under the guidance of Gustave Flaubert. His breakthrough came in 1880 with “Ball of Fat,” and over roughly a decade he produced more than 300 short stories and novellas and six novels. “Ball of Fat” follows a prostitute and a group of wealthy travelers sharing a carriage during the Franco-Prussian War, exposing class prejudice and moral hypocrisy. “A Woman’s Life” traces the life of Jeanne, a young aristocratic woman whose hopes for marriage encounter a harsher reality. “Bel-Ami” follows Georges Duroy as he uses his relationships with women to rise through Parisian journalism and society. Across his fiction, Maupassant examines desire, vulnerability, and the ways money and social status shape human relationships.
