Yukio Mishima (1925–1970) was a Japanese novelist, playwright, and literary critic who also wrote essays. Born in Tokyo as Kimitake Hiraoka, he graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law in 1947 and joined the Ministry of Finance, leaving after nine months to pursue writing. His first novel written directly for book publication, “Confessions of a Mask” (1949), established his reputation. Through a boy struggling with the distance between his sexual orientation and social expectations, it explored discrepancies between desire and the self presented to others. In “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion” (1956), inspired by an actual arson case, Mishima traced a young temple acolyte’s fascination with beauty and his movement towards its destruction. The novel received the Yomiuri Prize for Literature. Alongside fiction, he wrote modern plays and works drawing on Noh and Kabuki, with productions in Japan and abroad. During his final years he also engaged in political thought and activism while writing “The Sea of Fertility,” a tetralogy composed between 1965 and 1970. Using reincarnation as an organising structure, it examined questions of perception and existence. On 25 November 1970, after completing the final volume’s manuscript, Mishima took his own life at the Japan Self-Defense Forces’ Ichigaya headquarters.
