Michel Chion (born 1947) is a French film scholar, critic and composer from Creil. Alongside his research, he composes musique concrète, working with recorded sounds as musical material, and has directed films and video works. His writing examines how voices, noises and music interact with images, shaping what audiences perceive and how they understand a story. Exploring the power of voices whose sources remain unseen, “The Voice in Cinema” analyzes the relationship between voice and body through films by directors including Fritz Lang, Kenji Mizoguchi and Alfred Hitchcock. Telephone conversations, screams, mute characters and disembodied speech become ways of investigating how sound organizes cinematic space and narrative authority. Tracing the changing relationship between music and moving images, “Music in Cinema” ranges from silent film to later cinematic traditions. It considers music that supports an image as well as music that creates distance, tension or unexpected meanings. The book received the French film critics’ award for best book on cinema. Drawing on both compositional practice and close analysis of films, Chion treats listening as essential to understanding cinema, showing how a voice or musical passage can transform the significance of what appears on screen.
