Midori Miura (1949–2012) was a Japanese interpreter and translator of Russian. A graduate of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, she worked on literary translations and film subtitles. She developed a friendship with Svetlana Alexievich and interpreted for her during visits to Japan. Among her notable translations into Japanese is Alexievich’s “The Unwomanly Face of War,” an oral history of Soviet women who served in World War II. The book recounts their everyday experiences at the front, fear, friendships, and the prejudice they faced after returning home, preserving memories long overshadowed by official narratives of victory. In her own book, “Mute-katsuryu Roshia-go Tsuyaku,” Miura describes how she learned Russian and recounts her experiences interpreting at film festivals and other assignments.
