Toshiya Miki is a Japanese translator of nonfiction on business, international affairs, and science. He entered industrial and publishing translation after working as a company employee. His translation of Scott Sonenshein’s “Stretch” introduces an approach to making better use of resources already at hand, rather than continually seeking more. In Safi Bahcall’s “Loonshots,” he presents an account of the organizational conditions that allow unconventional ideas to develop. Edward Fishman’s “Chokepoints” turns to economic statecraft, examining how financial networks and control over technology become instruments of sanctions and geopolitical influence. Together, these translations explore the ways institutions and systems shape what individuals, companies, and governments can achieve.
