Yumiko Mifune (born 1962) is an English-to-Japanese translator of nonfiction in fields including cultural history, psychology, neuroscience, and health. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, she worked as a piano teacher, among other occupations, before becoming involved in book translation. In 2016, she co-translated Nicholas A. Basbanes’s “On Paper” with Yoshie Ichinaka and Masahiro Ogata. Published in Japanese as “Kami: Nisen-nen no Rekishi,” the book explores paper through human activities rather than treating it solely as a manufacturing technology. Drawing on reporting in China, Japan, and other places, it examines currency, warfare, authentication and forgery, diaries and letters, origami, and the people who make and use paper. Her subsequent translations also addressed cognition, behavior, and everyday life. She translated Anders Hansen’s “The Real Happy Pill,” a work of popular neuroscience examining relationships between physical activity and stress, concentration, memory, mood, and creativity. The Japanese edition “Undo No,” published in 2022, expanded and re-edited an earlier edition that she had translated in 2018. Alongside accounts of research, it discussed practical ways to incorporate exercise into daily routines. In 2025, she translated Lena Skogholm’s “The Connection Code,” published in Japanese as “Aite wa Hito ka: Hanashi ga Tsujinai Toki Wani kamo Shiremasen.” Using the brain’s responses as a framework, the book considers situations in which people become emotional or defensive and explains approaches to communication that take account of both the other person’s state and one’s own.
