『イノベーションの地政学』(原題 “The New Geography of Innovation: The Global Contest for Breakthrough Technologies”)では、シリコンバレー以外の地域から世界的な技術企業が生まれる条件を探った。
Mehran Gul is an author who studies how companies and countries innovate. After undergraduate study at the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Pakistan, he attended graduate school at Yale, where he was a Fulbright Scholar, Fox International Fellow, and Teaching Fellow. In 2009–10, his Fox fellowship took him to Jawaharlal Nehru University in India. He subsequently worked on the digital transformation of industries at the World Economic Forum in Geneva and as an expert on higher education, entrepreneurship, and industrial policy at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in Vienna. In 2017, a proposal that developed into his first book won the Financial Times/McKinsey Bracken Bower Prize for young business writers. “The New Geography of Innovation: The Global Contest for Breakthrough Technologies,” published in Japanese as “Innovation no Chiseigaku,” investigated the conditions under which globally significant technology companies emerge outside Silicon Valley. Examining companies including Taiwan’s TSMC, the Netherlands’ ASML, and South Korea’s Samsung, Gul broadened the discussion beyond a contest between the United States and China. He considered the interaction of national industrial strategies, talent and migration, universities and research institutions, risk capital, and corporate cultures, tracing how particular places turn breakthrough technologies into businesses.
