Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fictionを受賞した。
Megha Majumdar is an Indian-born novelist and editor. Raised in Kolkata, she moved to the United States to attend Harvard University and subsequently studied social anthropology at Johns Hopkins University. She worked in publishing at Catapult in New York. Her debut novel, A Burning (2020), centres on Jivan, a young Muslim woman accused of involvement in a train attack after posting a comment on Facebook. Her fate intersects with that of a physical-education teacher seeking political advancement and Lovely, an aspiring actor who possesses information that could help her. The novel places their different ambitions—escaping poverty, gaining power, and finding success in film—against choices about testimony and silence that can determine another person’s future. It was longlisted for the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction, and Majumdar received a Whiting Award in fiction in 2022. Her second novel, A Guardian and a Thief (2025), unfolds over one week in a near-future Kolkata beset by climate disruption and food shortages. A woman preparing to emigrate to America with her young daughter and elderly father loses their immigration documents in a theft. Her search runs alongside the story of Boomba, whose efforts to feed his own family lead him into crime. The paired narratives examine how devotion to loved ones can coexist with harm to strangers. A Guardian and a Thief was a finalist for the 2025 National Book Award and won the American Library Association’s 2026 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. Majumdar was named a Guggenheim Fellow that year.
