Mason Currey is an American writer and editor born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, he has held editorial positions at Metropolis, Print and Core77, and contributed to publications including The New Yorker and The New York Times. His work examines how writers and artists organize their lives to make room for creative work. Growing out of a personal blog, “Daily Rituals: How Artists Work” brings together brief portraits of the working habits of 161 novelists, painters, composers, philosophers and other creative figures. Through details such as waking hours, walks, workspaces and coffee consumption, the book explores the practical arrangements behind artistic and intellectual production. Focusing on 143 women, “Daily Rituals: Women at Work” broadens that inquiry to consider how creative people have secured time and space amid domestic responsibilities, financial pressures and discrimination. Its subjects include Virginia Woolf, Frida Kahlo, Yayoi Kusama and Susan Sontag. Currey uses these individual accounts to examine the relationship between creative ambitions and the circumstances of everyday life. He also writes Subtle Maneuvers, a newsletter on the creative process, continuing his exploration of the habits, compromises and material conditions that help people sustain their work.
