メアリー・シェリー（Mary Shelley、1797–1851） イギリスの小説家。詩人パーシー・ビッシュ・シェリーの妻であり、哲学者ウィリアム・ゴドウィンと思想家メアリー・ウルストンクラフトの娘。1818年に発表した『フランケンシュタイン』（原題 "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus"）によって近代SFの源流を築いた。『フランケンシュタイン』は、生命創造に挑んだ科学者と、その実験によって生み出された存在の悲劇を通して、科学の可能性と責任、孤独、そして人間とは何かという問いを描いている。
Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist best known for pioneering modern science fiction. The daughter of philosopher William Godwin and writer Mary Wollstonecraft, and the wife of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, she published "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" in 1818. The novel follows a scientist whose attempt to create life leads to tragedy, exploring the responsibilities of scientific discovery, the pain of isolation, and the search for what it means to be human.
