Mary L. Gray is an American anthropologist and media scholar whose ethnographic research examines how digital technologies transform labor, identity, and human rights. She spent more than a decade as a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and has held academic affiliations with Indiana University and Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. Named a MacArthur Fellow in 2020, she later founded The Resolve Institute and became Principal Investigator of Project Resolve, initiatives supporting community-driven approaches to AI innovation. In “Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley from Building a New Global Underclass,” coauthored with Siddharth Suri, Gray documents the people who verify search results, label images, moderate content, and perform other largely invisible tasks that make supposedly automated digital services function, while often working without stable pay or conventional labor protections.
