メイケナ・グッドマン（Makenna Goodman）は、アメリカの小説家、編集者。バーモント州を拠点に活動し、長年にわたり出版編集に携わる一方、『ニューヨーク・レビュー・オブ・ブックス』『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』『ロサンゼルス・レビュー・オブ・ブックス』などに文芸評論、エッセイ、短編小説を寄稿してきた。2020年に『The Shame』（未邦訳）で小説家としてデビューし、母親であることと創作への欲求、田舎での自給的な生活、資本主義や消費社会との矛盾を描いた。第2作『Helen of Nowhere』（未邦訳）は2026年ブッカー賞ロングリストに選出。現代社会から離れて森で自給自足の生活を送る女性ヘレンと、彼女を訪ねる語り手との交流を通して、自然のなかで生きることへの憧れと現実、所有や労働、共同体、自由をめぐる問いを、寓話と現実が入り混じる物語として描いている。
Makenna Goodman is an American novelist and editor based in Vermont. Alongside a career in publishing that has spanned two decades, she has contributed literary criticism, essays, interviews, and short fiction to publications including The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. She made her debut as a novelist in 2020 with "The Shame," which explores the tensions between motherhood and artistic ambition, rural self-sufficiency and consumer culture, and the desire to escape the life one has chosen. Her second novel, "Helen of Nowhere," was longlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize. Centered on a woman named Helen who has withdrawn from contemporary society to pursue a self-sufficient life in the woods and the narrator who visits her, the novel uses a shifting, fable-like narrative to explore competing ideas of nature, property, labor, community, and freedom.
