Masashi Kishimoto (born 1974) is a Japanese manga artist from Okayama Prefecture. He won the Hop Step Award for new manga artists with “Karakuri” before creating “Naruto,” which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2014. The series follows Naruto Uzumaki, a boy shunned by his village because a powerful nine-tailed fox is sealed inside him, as he pursues his dream of becoming Hokage, the village’s leader. Through his relationships with friends, mentors, and his rival Sasuke Uchiha, Kishimoto explores loneliness, the desire for recognition, revenge, and the hatred passed down through generations of warfare. Battles involving elaborate ninja techniques unfold alongside the losses and convictions that shape characters on opposing sides, raising the question of whether people divided by violence can understand one another. “Naruto” has been translated into numerous languages and adapted into anime, films, and video games.
