Kiko Llaneras (born 1981) is a Spanish data journalist and writer who uses statistics and visualization to analyze elections, social change, and sport. Born in Alicante, he studied industrial automation and electronics engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, graduating in 2005. After earning his doctorate, he taught in Girona and spent about ten years researching mathematical models of bacteria. Alongside his academic work, he began blogging, co-founded the social-science discussion site Politikon, and contributed to Jot Down magazine. He left academia in 2015 and joined El País the following year. There he has led the visual and data team, developing statistical election forecasts and detailed maps of income, voting patterns, and other aspects of society. His book Think Clearly: Eight Simple Rules to Succeed in the Data Age, first published in Spanish as Piensa claro and translated into Japanese as この複雑な世界を生き抜くための思考術――自分の直感にだまされないための8つのルール, brought together quantitative approaches he had used in research and reporting. It examined biased samples, the difficulty of establishing causation, and the roles of chance and uncertainty. Through examples including the Chernobyl disaster and the birth months of footballers, he explained ways to interpret data and question decisions based solely on intuition.
