Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor is an American historian and scholar of African American studies. She is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, where her work examines housing policy, racial inequality, and the history of Black social movements and radicalism. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2021. In "Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership," Taylor investigates federal efforts to expand Black homeownership after the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968. She shows how the shift from exclusionary redlining to government-supported inclusion created new opportunities for banks and real estate companies to sell deteriorating properties and burdensome mortgages to low-income Black families. The book was longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award for Nonfiction and named a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in History.
