Masami Fukushima (1929–1976) was a Japanese editor, science-fiction writer, critic and translator born in Karafuto, now Sakhalin. At Hayakawa Publishing, he helped introduce overseas science fiction and became the founding editor of SF Magazine, launched in 1959. Alongside translating and publishing English-language fiction, he provided opportunities for emerging Japanese writers and worked to develop an audience for the genre. Recalling the formative years of Japanese science fiction, “Mito no Jidai: Nihon SF o Kizuita Otoko no Kaisoroku,” a memoir of building the field, describes the magazine’s creation, the introduction of overseas works and encounters with new writers. It records the practical challenges of establishing science fiction within Japanese publishing. His translations include Robert A. Heinlein’s “The Door into Summer,” published in Japanese as 『夏への扉』, in which an inventor betrayed by those close to him uses suspended animation and time travel in an attempt to rebuild his life. He also translated Arthur C. Clarke’s “Childhood’s End” as 『幼年期の終り』. Set in a world brought peace and prosperity under alien rule, the novel questions humanity’s future and its place in the universe. Through his editorial and translation work, Fukushima introduced Japanese readers to science fiction ranging from stories of individual renewal to visions of humanity’s transformation.
