共同通信社は、国内外のニュースを取材・編集し、全国の新聞社や放送局、海外メディアに記事、写真、映像を配信する日本の通信社。1945年、全国の新聞社とNHKが参加する社団法人として発足し、2010年に一般社団法人へ移行した。日々のニュースを届ける一方、継続取材した連載や記録をまとめ、社会の変化を読み解く書籍を編んできた。『記者ハンドブック』は、その報道実務を言葉の面から支えてきた用字用語集で、前身は1949年刊の「ニュースマンズ・ハンドブック」。1956年の初版以来、表記や用語を見直し、記者だけでなく、文章を書く人に向けた手引きとなっている。取材の対象は政治や事件にとどまらず、一人ひとりの暮らしや生きづらさにも及ぶ。新聞連載「迷い道」をまとめた『迷いのない人生なんて』では、家族との葛藤、仕事の失敗、病気や別れを経験した人々を訪ね、回り道を重ねる人生に耳を傾ける。さらに「からだ⇄世界」を書籍化した『この身体で生きていく』では、身体の感覚や制約と向き合いながら、自分の進む道を見いだした人々を50編で描いた。速報では伝えきれない個々の経験を継続して記録し、その声から社会を見る視点を読者に届けている。

Kyodo News is a Japanese news agency that gathers and edits domestic and international news and supplies articles, photographs, and video to newspapers, broadcasters, and overseas media. It was established in 1945 as an association supported by newspapers across Japan and NHK, and became a general incorporated association in 2010. Alongside daily reporting, its publications bring together sustained investigations, newspaper series, and documentary records to examine social change. Its “Kisha Handbook,” a guide to Japanese journalistic usage and spelling, grew out of the “Newsman’s Handbook” published in 1949. First issued under its current title in 1956, the handbook has been revised to address changing language and usage, serving writers beyond the newsroom as well as reporters. Kyodo’s longer reporting also attends to experiences that rarely fit into breaking news. Based on the newspaper series “Mayoimichi,” “Mayoi no Nai Jinsei Nante” follows people who have faced family conflict, professional setbacks, illness, and bereavement, listening to lives shaped by uncertainty and detours. “Kono Karada de Ikite Iku” develops the series “Karada ⇄ Sekai” into fifty accounts of people finding their own paths through the sensations and limitations of their bodies. These books extend the agency’s reporting into sustained portraits of individual lives, giving readers ways to consider society through the experiences of the people within it.
