Tomoko Kitagawa is a Japanese translator working across social science, history and psychology. She completed a master’s degree in sociology at Nara Women’s University and worked at the National Diet Library before entering translation. Her Japanese translation of Ian Morris’s Why the West Rules—for Now presents a long comparative history of East and West, examining geography and social development as explanations for Western predominance. In Meg Jay’s Supernormal, she conveyed the experiences of people who survived difficult childhoods, including the lasting injuries that can remain behind outward achievement. Roberta Wohlstetter’s Pearl Harbor: Warning and Decision, another of her translations, examines intelligence and decision-making before the attack and the difficulty of recognising warnings amid competing information. Moving between large historical patterns and individual lives, Kitagawa’s translations introduce different ways of understanding the circumstances that shape human judgement and action.
