Rei Kitagawa is a Japanese translator whose work includes science, natural history, design, and art. Many of these translations are illustrated books that connect specialist knowledge with a general readership. Kitagawa translated Naomi Pollock’s “Japanese Design Since 1945,” a survey of industrial products, household objects, and furniture that places designers’ work within the changing circumstances of postwar Japan. In J. W. Rinzler’s “Rick Baker: Metamorphosis,” Kitagawa worked on an extensive illustrated record of the special-effects makeup artist’s creations and working methods. The volume traces the craft and technology behind Baker’s film work. Kitagawa also translated Jacqueline Stroud and Marc Redmile-Gordon’s “Under Your Feet,” an illustrated introduction to the materials, organisms, and ecological relationships found beneath our feet. The Japanese edition explained soil through processes ranging from microbial activity to wider environmental cycles.
