Sachiko Kishimoto (born 1960) is a Japanese literary translator and essayist from Kanagawa Prefecture. She graduated in English literature from Sophia University and worked in the advertising department of a liquor company before becoming a translator. Alongside translating English-language fiction and illustrated books, she writes essays that turn everyday observations into unexpected imaginative excursions. For the Japanese edition of Lucia Berlin’s “A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories,” published as “Sojifu no Tame no Tebikisho,” Kishimoto selected and translated twenty-four stories from the original collection. Drawing on Berlin’s experiences of work, family, and addiction, they bring hardship and humor into close contact. In her own essay collection “Ne ni Motsu Type,” small irritations, memories, and curious turns of phrase develop into elaborate fantasies, delivered with deadpan precision. The book won the Kodansha Essay Award in 2007. Visiting remembered places and locations that arouse her curiosity, “Shinu made ni Ikitai Umi” brings present-day landscapes into dialogue with personal memories. Its essays attend to disappearing places and minor experiences that might otherwise vanish without a record. Kishimoto received the Itami Juzo Award in 2026 for her work in translation and essay writing.
