Tomomi Kiriya is a Japanese translator of English-language books on science, medicine, history, and fiction. Born in Tokyo, she graduated in journalism from Southern Illinois University. Jonathan Marks’s writing on human diversity examines relationships between genetic science and pseudoscientific accounts of human differences. Bill Bryson’s “The Body” explains the systems that sustain everyday life and the history of research into them. David Gibbins’s “A History of the World in Twelve Shipwrecks” uses vessels and objects preserved underwater to explore trade and human movement. Kiriya’s translations connect scientific investigation with historical explanation and narrative, introducing different ways of interpreting evidence about people and their world.
