Gísli Pálsson (1949–) is an Icelandic cultural anthropologist. He earned a doctorate in social anthropology from the University of Manchester and served as professor of anthropology and director of the Institute of Anthropology at the University of Iceland, where he is now professor emeritus. His research has examined fishing communities, Arctic cultures, genomics and society, slavery, and relationships between humans and the natural environment, with particular attention to environmental anthropology and extinction. In “The Last of Its Kind: The Search for the Great Auk and the Discovery of Extinction,” Pálsson traces the fate of the flightless seabird whose last known pair was killed off Iceland in 1844, showing how hunting, specimen collecting, and scientific inquiry contributed to its disappearance and shaped the modern recognition of species extinction.
