Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936), usually known as G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, critic, poet, and essayist whose work ranged across fiction, literary biography, religious argument, and social commentary. Born in London, he studied at the Slade School of Art and worked in publishing before establishing himself as a writer. Newspaper and magazine contributions formed the basis of a career in which he used paradox to question familiar assumptions about everyday life, contemporary ideas, and literature. The Man Who Was Thursday (1908) follows Gabriel Syme, a poet and police detective who infiltrates a secret anarchist council. Its pursuit narrative turns repeatedly on reversals of identity and appearances. Orthodoxy, published the same year, traces the intellectual journey that brought Chesterton to Christian belief, examining reason, freedom, tradition, and wonder at the world. The Innocence of Father Brown (1911) introduced his first collection of stories about an unassuming Catholic priest who investigates apparently bizarre crimes through his understanding of human conduct and psychology. Alongside his detective fiction, Chesterton wrote literary biographies and newspaper essays and continued to engage with Christianity, politics, and economic life. He was received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1922 and edited G.K.’s Weekly from 1925 until his death.
