Cathy O'Neil (born 1972) is an American mathematician, data scientist, and specialist in algorithmic auditing. She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University and taught mathematics at Barnard College before working as a quantitative analyst at the hedge fund D. E. Shaw. She later worked as a data scientist in the technology sector, an experience that led her to focus on the social consequences of mathematical models and algorithms. She founded ORCAA, an algorithmic auditing company that examines the fairness and risks of algorithms used by businesses and organizations. In "Weapons of Math Destruction," O'Neil examines mathematical models used in education, hiring, employment, credit, and criminal justice, showing how seemingly objective systems can amplify existing biases and inequalities and create feedback loops that make those inequalities increasingly entrenched.
