Catherine D'Ignazio is an American data scholar and designer whose work examines the intersections of data science, feminism, and social justice. She is an Associate Professor of Urban Science and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Director of the Data + Feminism Lab. She holds an MS from the MIT Media Lab and has worked on data literacy, civic engagement, data visualization, and tools that enable communities to use data to address social issues. In "Data Feminism," co-authored with Lauren F. Klein, D'Ignazio challenges the idea that data are inherently neutral or objective, examining who collects and classifies data, whose interests they serve, and how power shapes data systems. Drawing on intersectional feminism, the book develops an approach to data science that recognizes inequalities involving gender, race, and class and seeks to make data practices more equitable.
